01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Maboroshidako, choosing the seasoning is part of the fun of ordering takoyaki. You can have sauce, soy sauce, salt or ponzu, each with the option of mayonnaise, or go for “bozu”, with nothing on top. The menu lists portions from 6 to 15 pieces, so you could start with a smaller serving to try a flavour or compare a few different ones. One visitor described the takoyaki as generously sized, with a soft, gooey centre and a chewy surface. Another enjoyed the flavour of the batter both while the takoyaki were hot and after they had cooled a little.

Some diners favour the classic sauce and mayonnaise, while others have enjoyed the salt and mayonnaise. You could try one seasoning on your first visit, then choose another next time. Chopped green onion can be added to portions of 9 or 12 pieces, giving you another way to vary the topping as well as the seasoning.

For something alongside the takoyaki, consider buta-tama (pork okonomiyaki) or karaage. A diner who tried the buta-tama remarked on its substantial thickness, tender pork, cooked cabbage and sweet-leaning sauce. The menu also lists an egg topping (50 yen) and an egg-and-cheese topping (150 yen). Karaage comes in small, medium and large sizes, listed at 350, 460 and 680 yen.

As well as takeaway, there is reportedly a space beside the shop where you can sit and eat. Pick something up while browsing the shopping street, or stay and enjoy takoyaki and buta-tama on the spot. The choice of how to eat is straightforward.
